Nick was an average 10 year-old boy, who loved baseball, basketball and playing with friends. He had always been very healthy. On August 1, 2013, Nick Henry’s life changed forever.
Inside his brain lived a silent killer: an Arteriovenous Malformation (AVM). That unforgettable summer day, Nick suffered a massive brain bleed and his heart stopped.
Luckily, a neighbor was able to revive Nick as his family frantically waited for the ambulance to arrive. When Nick arrived at Sparrow, he was rushed into surgery to control the bleeding. Later that day, the Henry family received the worst news: the doctors weren’t certain that Nick would survive. In order to let Nick’s brain rest, he was placed into a medically induced coma for 10 days.
Only about one percent of the population is born with an AVM. Many people with an AVM like Nick’s don’t survive after a brain hemorrhage; if they do, more often than not, will struggle with severe and permanent physical or mental impairment for the rest of their lives.
Nick defied the odds: he woke from his coma and was capable of moving all four limbs; he is able to do everything he did before the bleed. His recovery is nothing short of a miracle, which is why Nick was chosen as the Sparrow Children’s Center Miracle Child for 2014.
